Outline
UNDP’s Tsunami Project encountered many people who became champions of tsunami awareness in their schools and communities. One such champion is 9-year-old Kenit, who is promoting tsunami preparedness in India after participating in a drill organized under the Tsunami Project. More recently, after the volcano and tsunami in Tonga, UNDP also met Li’oa, a driver, who risked his own life to warn others. These stories are so impactful that UNDP decided to create a series of ‘Tsunami Story Books’, aimed at young readers to raise awareness against tsunami by sharing real-life experiences. In collaboration with Tohoku University, UNDP is bringing the voices of these champions of tsunami awareness to the World Bosai Forum 2023. In a joint session on 11th March 2023 - marking the anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami - UNDP and Tohoku University will launch the 5th book of the series: The "Tsunami Walk" which features different stories of resilience experienced by communities living along the Tohoku coastline, Japan.
UNDP and Japan hold a long-standing partnership in disaster risk reduction. Since 2017, UNDP, in partnership with the Government of Japan, has been implementing the Tsunami Project in 24 countries in Asia and the Pacific, training over 200,000 students.
