Outline
Eight years have passed since the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) was adopted, but since the adoption, the world has come to face further diverse challenges, such as COVID-19, conflicts, and the widening gap between the rich and the poor, both domestically and internationally.
However, if only overwhelmed by such situations and act passively to calamities after occurrence, we would never attain the real sustainable development. The importance of pre-disaster efforts is never lasting and even getting more important in such increasingly critical situations. In this backdrop, clearer, simpler, and more catalysis and practical efforts in knowledge and tools are needed to embody and strengthen the spirit of “pre-disaster investment in DRR,” which the Sendai Framework aspired to eight years ago.
Based on this recognition of the current situation, this session will present what the world should prioritize at present for the SFDRR and in the future toward the next framework for disaster risk reduction in terms of knowledge and tools. And, initiating a new open, flexible, and active worldwide platform or circle among actors in academia, governments, public agencies, private sector in like-minded and DRR needing countries would be a strong vessel for jointly pursuing new challenges, as exemplified in this session.
