Outline

Through twelve years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, recovery and reconstruction of the disaster-stricken areas have progressed significantly. On the other hand, there remain challenges in promoting aid for disaster recovery that leaves no one behind, which includes advancing efforts for psychosocial recovery. Not a few disaster victims point out to this aspect even now. In this session, Nobuyuki Asai will present Soka Gakkai’s initiative called “Building Bonds of Hope” concerts which started in 2014, and its effect on psychosocial recovery. Secondly, Fabienne van Eck from Musicians Without Borders will introduce the pedagogy of MWB's music leadership curriculum. This approach, based on their on-ground experiences with people affected by war and armed conflict, includes trauma awareness, helping music leaders to recognize signs of de-regulation of the nervous system, didactic and pedagogical skills, and diverse musical tools that can help children to build connection, self-respect and a sense of community. Thirdly, Professor Takeo Fujiwara from Tokyo Medical and Dental University will address the impact of adverse childhood experiences on children’s mental health and how it could potentially contribute to their growth from a perspective of life-course epidemiology, quoting his continuous research in the Tohoku region.
