Outline
With rising temperature, there has been a global increase in natural disasters and economic losses, leading to growing needs for solutions to address these issues. As temperature increase is expected to continue, the necessity for "adaptation" measures to address climate change, including responses to climate variations, heavy rainfall, and droughts, is anticipated to rise especially in developing countries. The costs for these adaptation measures are projected to maximum of $387 billion by 2030 (Adaptation Gap Report 2024, UNEP).
Like other countries, climate change and disaster risk reduction are cross-cutting issues that need to be addressed across all sectors in Japan. Ministry of the Environment (MoE) believes it is essential to integrate climate change and disaster risk reduction efforts, and has developed a practical manual, which was published in 2024.
Additionally, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) views the potential to contribute to climate change adaptation in developing countries through the introduction of Japanese companies’ technologies, products, and services as a business opportunity. Therefore, METI is promoting Japanese companies’ adaptation business in overseas.
MoE and METI will share their domestic and international efforts toward the social implementation of "climate change×bosai ".
