Announcement of the World Bosai Forum 2025

A Global Biennial Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai:

Open to All Citizens and Specialists

world bosai forum

Sendai is a city that experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. This city is where the global framework for disaster risk reduction, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR), was adopted as the outcome of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

This is why we started the World Bosai Forum in Sendai. Our vision is to offer a platform for worldwide stakeholders from various sectors to propose, discuss, and share disaster risk reduction strategies.

Our purpose is to “end the misery of people suffering from disasters.”

What is Bosai?

The term “Bosai” covers everything you do to prepare for a disaster, what you do when it happens, and how you recover and rebuild afterwards. This concept has been cultivated from Japanʼs long history of living with natural hazards, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

A total of 5,412 participants from 40 countries and regions attended our forum in 2023. This diverse program facilitated dialogue among exhibitors and visitors from international organizations, governments, academia, the private sector, NGOs, and citizens.

Advocacy to the United Nations:
At the World Bosai Forum 2023, we formulated recommendations for the Mid-Term Review Process of the SFDRR, which were encapsulated in the WBF Sendai Declaration 2023. These recommendations were handed over to Ms. Mami Mizutori, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Reduction and Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. Subsequently, our recommendations were presented at the UN General Assembly in May 2023. The full text of the declaration can be accessed on our website.
