Outline
Thailand has experienced significant disasters, such as the 2004 tsunami (5,401 deaths, 17.2% children) and the 2011 floods (813 deaths, 16.25% children). To address the vulnerabilities of children, a project was initiated in Phang Nga Province to develop youth leadership in tsunami preparedness, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4, and 11.PANJAPA ModelThe PANJAPA Model focuses on Prevention, Awareness, Networking, Joint Action, Preparation, and Adaptation to empower youth in disaster preparedness. It aims to create a sustainable, community-driven approach where youth play key roles in disaster risk reduction. Objectives 1. To develop youth leaders with knowledge and skills in tsunami preparedness.2. To establish a youth leader network collaborating with public and private sectors. The program consists of two phases: Phase 1 Training in skills like emergency bag preparation, crisis communication, BLS, and VR simulations, based on the PANJAPA Model. Phase 2: Knowledge dissemination to schools and communities, with youth leaders involved in disaster preparedness plans.Methodology This quasi-experimental study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design with follow-ups at one and three months. ConclusionThe initiative improved youth tsunami preparedness knowledge and behaviors (ρ < 0.001). Incorporating SDGs and the PANJAPA Model emphasizes education, resilience, and sustainability, empowering communities to respond effectively to disasters.
