概要
Tsunami events are one of the most destructive natural hazards, with large events causing loss of life, livelihood and damage to infrastructure. Tsunami surveys are an important tool for hazard assessments to attempt to mitigate the destruction of future events. But due to the rare occurrence of tsunamis, only a small amount have been measured with modern methods. This lack of data represents a limitation in the development of tsunami forecasting through simulation. Therefore, tsunami sedimentology enables researchers to reconstruct events in the past by estimating wave heights, inundation, and the recurrence of tsunamis in a given location. To achieve this, the erosion and deposition of a tsunami event is studied in preserved sediment layers. With a more complete historical tsunami record, the accuracy of hazard assessments in coastal areas can be improved. This poster illustrates how tsunami deposits can be used to improve risk assessments with a core sampled in Shimokita peninsula as a physical example.
