概要

Floods cause significant disruption to human activities and result in severe damage to infrastructure and livelihoods. Mapping land surface water areas plays a crucial role in disaster management by identifying affected regions. Satellite data, which offers extensive spatial coverage at high temporal frequency, is highly valued for capturing detailed information about the Earth's surface. However, there remains a lack of simple and rapid tools for detecting flooded areas immediately after disaster events using satellite data. Here, we demonstrate that water index-based mapping derived from optical satellite data can promptly visualise flooded areas with relatively high accuracy. The simple equation supporting the water index enables robust and efficient calculation and mapping, facilitating a clearer understanding of flood-affected areas and supporting the timely implementation of countermeasures. The Google Earth Engine platform, which was employed for water surface visualisation in this study, is freely accessible for non-profit activities, including disaster risk reduction. The constructed codes, made publicly available on GitHub, will benefit researchers and practitioners dedicated to mitigating the impacts of water-related disasters.
