Who We Are
Message from the Founder
Representative Director Yuichi Ono became a UN official with a passion for disaster risk reduction. This was triggered by a disaster he witnessed in a developing country, where countless bodies were buried in a high school playground.
After 10 years of working for the UN, Ono heard the news of the Great East Japan Earthquake and engaged in volunteer work in Tohoku, Japan. His experience inspired Ono to work for the Tohoku region, and he decided to leave the UN and take up a position at Tohoku University.
Immediately after his appointment, Ono worked hard to organize the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, and after hard work, he was taken to hospital. When he thought that he might not see his children again, he realized that "this is how parents feel when they think of their children who were swallowed by the tsunami after the earthquake."
