Great East Japan Earthquake
On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck the Tohoku region of Japan, triggered by a massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. The tsunami devastated coastal areas and caused a serious accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The disaster claimed more than 20,000 lives and caused tremendous damage, making the subsequent reconstruction an urgent issue.

The 3rd United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction was held in Sendai, Japan, and the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction" was adopted as a guideline for international disaster risk reduction efforts by 2030, with four priority actions and seven targets agreed upon.

This is a walk event to promote Tohoku's "Build Back Better" efforts to the world. Participants walked from Fukushima to Aomori, listened to the voices of people working on reconstruction, and communicated the efforts and attractions of Tohoku online and in multiple languages.
